After guiding thousands of guests through my hometown over the years, I’ve been asked this question more times than I can count. And while Munich certainly isn’t short of fantastic hotels, choosing the right one can make a huge difference to your experience.
This guide isn’t sponsored by any hotel.
These are simply the places I genuinely recommend to my own guests, family, and friends. Whether you’re looking for pure luxury, a charming boutique hotel, or simply the perfect location for exploring Munich, you’ll hopefully find the right option here.

Before You Book: A Few Munich Insider Tips
Location Matters More Than You Think
Munich is a wonderfully walkable city.
If it’s your first visit, I strongly recommend staying somewhere close to the historic Old Town. Many of Munich’s most famous sights—including Marienplatz, the Viktualienmarkt, the Hofbräuhaus, the Frauenkirche, and the Residenz—are all within easy walking distance of one another.
Hotels outside the city center are often considerably cheaper, which is absolutely fine—as long as they’re close to an U-Bahn or S-Bahn station.
Munich’s public transportation system is excellent, clean, safe, and reliable. Even late at night, night buses and trams make getting back to your hotel easy.
Hotel Prices in Munich
Munich is one of Germany’s more expensive cities, but you’ll still find great hotels in almost every price category.
As a general guideline:
- Budget hotels: from around €80–120
- Comfortable 4-star hotels: approximately €120–250
- Luxury 5-star hotels: usually from €300 per night
Prices naturally depend on the season and availability.
During major trade fairs—and especially Oktoberfest—prices can easily double or even triple.
Book Early
One of the biggest mistakes visitors make is waiting too long.
Munich is an extremely popular destination throughout the year, and the best hotels often sell out months in advance.
This is especially true if you’re visiting:
- Oktoberfest
- Christmas Markets
- major trade fairs
- spring and summer weekends
The earlier you book, the better your selection—and usually the better your price.
Visiting Munich During Oktoberfest?
If you’re planning to experience the world’s biggest beer festival, here are a few insider tips.
Book as early as possible.
Many hotels begin accepting Oktoberfest reservations as early as January.
By August, affordable rooms are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
Consider Staying Outside Munich
If hotel prices in Munich are simply too high, don’t panic.
Many surrounding towns have excellent train connections into the city, including:
- Dachau
- Fürstenfeldbruck
- Olching
- Wolfratshausen
- Unterhaching
- Erding
- Ebersberg
- Unterschleißheim
Just be aware that trains become extremely busy during Oktoberfest.
If Oktoberfest isn’t on your itinerary, I’d honestly recommend avoiding Munich during those two weeks. Hotel prices are significantly higher, the city is crowded, and you’ll enjoy a much more relaxed experience at almost any other time of the year.
The Best Areas to Stay in Munich
Every neighborhood has its own personality.
Altstadt-Lehel
Perfect for first-time visitors.
If you’re only spending a few days in Munich, this is my number one recommendation. Nearly everything is within walking distance.
Best for: Sightseeing, luxury hotels, short stays.
Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt
Ideal if you’re visiting Oktoberfest or arriving by train.
You’ll find excellent restaurants, nightlife, and generally better hotel prices than directly inside the Old Town.
Best for: Oktoberfest, nightlife, great value.
Maxvorstadt
Munich’s cultural heart.
Home to museums, universities, cafés, and beautiful architecture.
Best for: Art lovers and couples.
Schwabing
My favorite district if you’re staying a little longer.
Relaxed, elegant, full of cafés, beer gardens, and close to the English Garden.
Best for: Families and longer stays.
Au-Haidhausen
One of Munich’s most authentic neighborhoods.
Less touristy, wonderfully local, and full of fantastic restaurants.
Best for: Travelers looking for the “real” Munich.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski Munich
My Personal Favorite Hotel in Munich
If I had to choose just one luxury hotel in Munich, this would be it.
The Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski has been setting the standard for luxury hospitality since 1858. Located directly on the elegant Maximilianstraße, it combines timeless elegance, exceptional service, outstanding restaurants, and a beautiful spa with one of the best locations in the city.
From here, you’re only a short walk from Marienplatz, the Bavarian State Opera, the Hofbräuhaus, the Residenz, and many of Munich’s most famous attractions.
Whether you’re celebrating a honeymoon, anniversary, birthday, or simply want to experience Munich at its very best, it’s hard to go wrong with the Kempinski.
Sepp’s Honest Note: Munich is fortunate to have several world-class luxury hotels. While the Rosewood is the city’s newest luxury icon and the Mandarin Oriental offers a more intimate boutique experience, I personally keep coming back to the Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski. I simply love its timeless elegance, rich history, warm atmosphere, and the feeling of staying somewhere that has been part of Munich for generations.
Perfect for: Luxury travelers, first-time visitors, anniversaries, and anyone who appreciates classic five-star hospitality.

My choice for: Munich’s newest luxury experience.
Rosewood has quickly established itself as one of the finest hotels in Munich. Beautiful contemporary design, exceptional service, and an atmosphere that feels both luxurious and surprisingly intimate make it a fantastic choice for a special stay.
If you’re celebrating a honeymoon, anniversary, birthday, or simply want to treat yourself, this would certainly be one of my first recommendations.

My choice for: Munich’s grand classic.
If walls could talk, this hotel would have incredible stories to tell.
Since 1841, the Bayerischer Hof has welcomed royalty, celebrities, politicians, and world leaders. It offers outstanding restaurants, one of Munich’s best rooftop spas, and an unbeatable location in the heart of the Old Town.
A true Munich institution.

My choice for: Boutique luxury.
Smaller than many of Munich’s grand hotels but exceptionally elegant.
Its rooftop terrace is one of my favorite places in the city, and the service is exactly what you would expect from Mandarin Oriental.
Sepp’s Honest Note: At the moment, there is a major construction project taking place close to the hotel. While this won’t necessarily affect every stay, I believe it’s only fair to mention it if absolute peace and quiet during the day is important to you.

One of Munich’s newer luxury hotels.
The rooms overlooking Marienplatz and the Frauenkirche are simply spectacular. If location is your highest priority, this hotel is incredibly difficult to beat.

My choice for: Something completely different.
BEYOND isn’t a traditional hotel.
Instead, it feels more like staying in an exclusive private residence overlooking Marienplatz. Quiet, intimate, stylish, and one of Munich’s hidden gems.

My choice for: Stylish city breaks.
Probably Munich’s trendiest luxury hotel, featuring beautiful design, a lively atmosphere, and one of the city’s best spa areas.
Sepp’s Honest Note: The hotel is currently undergoing a major renovation. It remains open throughout the renovation, and the team is doing everything possible to minimize any disruption for guests. However, depending on the timing of your stay, renovation work could have a small impact on your overall experience. If absolute peace and quiet is your priority, this is something worth keeping in mind.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Le Méridien Munich
My choice for: Convenience.
Located directly opposite Munich Central Station, Le Méridien is an excellent choice if you’re arriving by train or planning several day trips throughout Bavaria. The transport connections couldn’t be better.
Sepp’s Honest Note: While the hotel itself is excellent, it is located right in Munich’s central station district. Like many railway station areas in larger European cities, the neighborhood has a mixed atmosphere. Personally, I don’t consider it dangerous, but some of my guests have mentioned that they didn’t feel entirely comfortable walking around the area late at night. During the day, however, it’s lively and perfectly fine, and once you’re inside the hotel, you’ll enjoy the high standards expected from Le Méridien.

My Favorite Four-Star Hotel in Munich
If you’re looking for the perfect combination of authentic Bavarian charm and an unbeatable location, it’s hard to beat the Platzl.
Located just steps from the Hofbräuhaus and Marienplatz, it offers a wonderful mix of tradition, comfort, and outstanding hospitality.
Sepp’s Honest Note: Many of my own guests stay here every year, and I honestly can’t remember receiving a single negative comment. If I had to recommend just one four-star hotel in Munich, this would almost certainly be it.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Maximilian Munich Apartments & Hotel
My choice for: Longer stays.
If you’re spending several days in Munich or simply appreciate having more space, this is an excellent choice. The apartments offer fully equipped kitchens while still providing the comfort and service of a boutique hotel.
Sepp’s Honest Note: At the moment, the hotel faces a similar situation to the Mandarin Oriental, with a major construction site directly opposite the property. The good news is that after speaking with several of my guests who have stayed here recently, none of them experienced any noticeable noise issues. Nevertheless, I believe it’s only fair to mention it so you know exactly what to expect before booking.

🥉 Platzl Hotel – My favorite four-star hotel in Munich. Authentic Bavarian hospitality, fantastic value, and one of the best locations in the city.
