Munich has hundreds of restaurants.
Traditional Bavarian Wirtshäuser, historic beer halls, modern restaurants, small neighborhood places and, of course, plenty of places designed primarily for tourists.
So where should you actually eat?
This is one of the questions my guests ask me all the time:
“Sepp, where would YOU go?”
And that’s exactly what this page is about.
This isn’t a ranking of Munich’s highest-rated restaurants.
It isn’t sponsored.
And I’m not trying to list every traditional restaurant in the city.
These are simply my personal recommendations — places I know, places I recommend to my guests and places where I’d happily sit down myself.
Some are right in Munich’s historic Old Town. Others require a short walk or ride outside the center, but I’ve included them because I think they’re worth knowing about.
If you’re looking for good Bavarian food, local beer and a proper Munich atmosphere, these are the places I’d start with.

Andechser am Dom
⭐ My Personal All-Round Favorite
If friends or guests ask me for one traditional Bavarian restaurant in Munich Old Town, Andechser am Dom is very often the first place that comes to mind.
It sits only a few steps from Frauenkirche, so the location couldn’t be much better.
But that’s not why it’s on my list.
I genuinely enjoy it.
The restaurant combines traditional Bavarian food with beer from the famous Kloster Andechs brewery south of Munich.
It’s cozy, traditional and central without feeling to me like you’re visiting somewhere purely because tourists are expected to go there.
I particularly like Andechser am Dom for lunch.
Spend your morning exploring Marienplatz, Frauenkirche and Viktualienmarkt, then stop here for a proper Bavarian meal and an Andechser beer.

Augustiner Stammhaus
🍺 My Choice for Classic Munich Beer Culture
There are certain names that simply belong to Munich.
And Augustiner is one of them.
Actually…
It’s probably one of my favorites. ❤️
The Augustiner Stammhaus sits directly on Neuhauser Straße, between Karlsplatz/Stachus and Marienplatz.
If you’re exploring Munich Old Town, you’ll probably walk past it anyway.
Inside you’ll find traditional rooms, Bavarian food and, most importantly, Augustiner beer.
For me, this is one of those places where visitors can experience a little piece of everyday Munich beer culture without needing to make an entire excursion out of it.

You don’t necessarily need to come for a huge dinner.
Sometimes an Augustiner, a small bite and an hour enjoying the atmosphere is enough.
Weisses Bräuhaus
🍺 My Choice for Weißbier
If you love Bavarian wheat beer, this one belongs on your list.
Weisses Bräuhaus is located in the Tal, just a few minutes from Marienplatz, and is closely connected with Schneider Weisse.
This is somewhere I’d particularly recommend if you want to combine traditional Bavarian food with one of Bavaria’s best-known Weißbier traditions.
It’s historic.
It’s lively.
And it feels properly Bavarian.

Spatenhaus an der Oper
🍽️ My Choice for a More Elegant Bavarian Dinner
Sometimes you want traditional Bavarian food…
But perhaps without the enormous beer hall.
That’s when I’d consider Spatenhaus an der Oper.
Its location is beautiful, directly opposite the Bavarian State Opera and next to the Residenz.
Compared with some of the other restaurants on this list, the atmosphere feels a little more refined.
I particularly like it for dinner after a day exploring the Residenz, Odeonsplatz and Maximilianstraße.

Ayinger am Platzl
🍺 My Choice Near Hofbräuhaus
Ayinger am Platzl has one very famous neighbor:
Hofbräuhaus.
But the experience is quite different.
Here you’ll find traditional Bavarian food paired with beer from the Ayinger brewery southeast of Munich.
I like recommending it to visitors who are already exploring the Platzl area but would prefer a smaller restaurant experience.
You can even do both.
Walk through Hofbräuhaus.
Experience the atmosphere.
Then head somewhere else for dinner.
There’s no rule saying everything has to happen in the same building. 😄

Donisl
📍 My Choice Directly at Marienplatz
Location, location, location.
Donisl sits right at Marienplatz.
You really couldn’t be much more central.
This makes it particularly useful during a sightseeing day when you’re exploring the New Town Hall, Frauenkirche, Viktualienmarkt and the surrounding Old Town.
Instead of walking across Munich looking for lunch, you’re already there.
Donisl is also one of Munich’s traditional restaurant names, with a history stretching back centuries.

This one is pretty easy.

If eating a proper crispy Schweinshaxe is on your Munich bucket list, this is one of the places I’d consider.
It’s central, traditional and focused on exactly the kind of hearty Bavarian food many visitors want to try at least once.

🥨 My Choice for a Cozy Wirtshaus
Not every Bavarian restaurant needs to be enormous.
That’s one reason I like Zum Straubinger.
Located around the Tal/Viktualienmarkt area, it offers a more intimate Wirtshaus atmosphere than Munich’s huge beer halls.
If you prefer something cozy and traditional, this is definitely one I’d keep in mind.

Hofbräuhaus München
🍺 My Choice for the Experience
Okay.
We have to talk about Hofbräuhaus. 😄
It’s probably Munich’s most famous beer hall and one of the best-known beer halls anywhere in the world.
Should you visit?
Yes.
Especially if it’s your first time in Munich.
Walk inside.
Listen to the music.
Look at the historic hall.
Watch the crowds.
Have a beer.
Enjoy it.
But if you ask me specifically:
“Sepp, is this your favorite restaurant for food?”
No.
For me, Hofbräuhaus is primarily about atmosphere and experience.
And there’s nothing wrong with that.

🌳 My Choice for a Traditional Beer Garden
We’re leaving the strict Old Town now, but only slightly.
And this one deserves the detour.
Augustiner-Keller is one of Munich’s classic beer-garden experiences.
When the weather is good and the chestnut trees are green, this is exactly the kind of place where I want to spend a summer afternoon or evening.
Cold Augustiner.
Bavarian food.
Chestnut trees.
Good company.
Honestly…

🍺 My Choice Away From the Old Town Crowds
Paulaner am Nockherberg takes you outside Munich’s main tourist center.
And that’s exactly why I’ve included it.
Nockherberg has a deep connection with Munich’s Paulaner brewing tradition and is famous locally for the annual Starkbierfest.
It’s a nice choice if you’ve already experienced Marienplatz and want to see another side of Munich beer culture.

Max Emanuel is another recommendation outside the strict Old Town.
Located in Maxvorstadt near Munich’s universities, it naturally attracts a different crowd from restaurants around Marienplatz.
The atmosphere is younger and more neighborhood-oriented.
It’s a nice place to experience a side of Munich that many first-time visitors never see.

It depends entirely on what you’re looking for.

A Few Things to Know Before Eating Out in Munich
Reservations
If there’s one restaurant you really want to visit, reserve a table.
Particularly on Friday and Saturday evenings and during Oktoberfest, Christmas market season, trade fairs and major events.
Tipping
Tipping in Germany is different from the United States.
For good restaurant service, rounding up or approximately 5–10% is common depending on the situation.
Usually you tell your server the amount you’d like to pay when paying the bill.
Don’t Wait for the Bill
Your waiter may not automatically bring your bill when you’ve finished eating.
That’s normal.
Simply say:
“Zahlen, bitte.”
And Please Don’t Rush
This is one of my favorite pieces of advice.
A good Bavarian meal isn’t something you need to squeeze between two sightseeing stops.
Sit down.
Order a beer.
Eat.
Talk.
Enjoy yourself.
Your next church will still be there in an hour. 😄

This list isn’t supposed to tell you:
“These are objectively the 12 best restaurants in Munich.”
Food doesn’t work like that.
These are simply places I personally recommend.
Some because I love the food.
Some because I love the beer.
Some because of the atmosphere.
And Hofbräuhaus?
That one’s here because everybody should experience it at least once. 😄
If you only have a few days in Munich, don’t try to visit all of them.
Pick two or three.
Try different breweries.
Eat something you’ve never eaten before.
And give yourself time to actually enjoy the experience.
Because Munich’s Wirtshaus culture isn’t simply about filling your stomach.
It’s part of Munich itself.
