My (Sepp's) General Tips for staying Overnight in Munich
Before I introduce you to my absolute favorite hotels in Munich, there are some general tips to search for the ideal hotel in Munich.
LOCATION:
Munich's city center is manageable, and the old town can be easily explored on foot. Many of the city hotels mentioned later are also located in the old town of Munich.
If you stay outside the center, make sure you have good connections to the subway and S-Bahn. The public transport network in Munich is excellent, and even at night you can always take the night trams or buses back to your hotel.
PRICES:
Munich is rather expensive, and hotel prices rise sharply during trade fairs and Oktoberfest. During Oktoberfest, it is not uncommon for hotels to increase their room and suite prices by 75 percent or more.
Apart from that, you can find an excellent selection of double rooms between 100 and 200 euros in all districts of Munich - from classic to modern to original hotel variants. Depending on the season, 5-star luxury hotels start at around 300 euros per night. In the Old Town, the choice of budget hotels is a little more limited, but there are plenty of affordable alternatives in the surrounding neighborhoods.
BOOK EARLY:
In Munich it is advisable to book your room or suite early, since the best hotels can be fully booked quickly. Especially if you are traveling in September to experience Oktoberfest or during trade fair times, you should definitely reserve in advance.
OKTOBERFEST:
Once a year, Munich turns into a tourist center during Oktoberfest. Between the end of September and the beginning of October almost all accommodations are fully booked.
If you want to visit Oktoberfest (also known as: Wiesn), I have a few helpful tips for booking a hotel for you:
- Book early: The first reservations for Oktoberfest will be made in January. From August onwards it will be difficult to find an affordable hotel room.
- Alternative accommodation in the surrounding area: The Ludwigs- und Isarvorstadt offers an ideal location for your Oktoberfest visit. However, if you are looking for cheaper accommodation, also consider the surrounding cities. Places like Dachau, Olching, Fürstenfeldbruck, Wolfratshausen, Unterhaching, Ebersberg, Erding and Unterschleißheim are well connected to Theresienwiese. Please note that the trains can get very crowded at this time.
If you don't want to visit Oktoberfest, you should avoid Munich in the two weeks between the end of September and the beginning of October.
The best neighborhoods to stay in Munich
Because of the variety sights and activities in Munich , I recommend that you stay overnight in the areas close to the center. This means you can easily explore the city on foot.
I particularly recommend the following districts of Munich for your accommodation:
- Altstadt-Lehel: Perfect for classic sightseeing when you're short on time.
- Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt: Ideal for a mix of sightseeing and partying, with budget accommodation close to the train station.
- Maxvorstadt: Ideal for art and culture lovers.
- Schwabing: Ideal for an overnight stay in a relaxed atmosphere.
- Au-Haidhausen: Perfect for quiet living among locals.
And now to my hotel recommendations for a luxurious and unforgettable stay in Munich.
