Why Berchtesgaden Deserves More Than a Day Trip From Munich
BERCHTESGADEN · MULTI-DAY TOURS · BAVARIAN ALPS
Munich is wonderful.
I love the city, I love showing people around Bavaria from Munich, and there is certainly no shortage of things to do.
But sometimes the best part of a vacation is simply…
Getting away from the city for a few days.
No rushing back to Munich in the evening.
No alarm clock set ridiculously early because you have a two-hour drive ahead of you.
Instead, imagine waking up surrounded by the Bavarian Alps, enjoying breakfast with the mountains outside and knowing that Lake Königssee, the Eagle’s Nest, Jenner Mountain and some of Bavaria’s most spectacular scenery are right on your doorstep.
Welcome to Berchtesgaden.
I’m Sepp, The Bavarian Guide, and over the last few years my private overnight adventures to Berchtesgaden have become my most-booked multi-day tour.
And I completely understand why.
Why I Think Berchtesgaden Deserves More Than One Day
Berchtesgaden can absolutely be visited as a day trip from Munich.
I do it regularly.
But can you see everything in one day?
Not even close.
The Berchtesgaden region has enough to keep you busy for three days and two nights very easily.
Honestly?
You could stay even longer.
You have extraordinary Alpine lakes, mountains, history, traditional Bavarian towns, salt mines, hiking opportunities and Salzburg just across the Austrian border.
That’s what makes Berchtesgaden such a wonderful escape from Munich.
Instead of trying to squeeze two or three attractions into one very long day, we can slow everything down.
And for me, that’s exactly what a vacation should sometimes be.
My Favorite Berchtesgaden Adventure: 3 Days / 2 Nights
There isn’t one fixed itinerary that every guest has to follow.
That’s not how I like to work.
Almost every multi-day adventure I organize is individually designed around my guests.
But if you asked me how I would spend three days and two nights in Berchtesgaden, it might look something like this.
Day 1 – Lake Königssee, Lake Obersee & Berchtesgaden
We leave Munich in the morning and head southeast toward the Bavarian Alps.
And once we arrive?
We slow down.
Lake Königssee
For me, Lake Königssee is one of the most beautiful places in Bavaria.
Surrounded by the steep mountains of Berchtesgaden National Park, the lake sometimes feels more like a Norwegian fjord than a Bavarian lake.
Our adventure begins with the famous boat ride across its crystal-clear water.
Along the way, you’ll experience the incredible mountain scenery before passing one of the most photographed places in Bavaria:
St. Bartholomä.
But we don’t necessarily have to stop there.
Continue to Lake Obersee
If the seasonal boat service is operating and you’re comfortable with some walking, we can continue toward Salet at the southern end of Königssee.
From there, we walk toward:
Lake Obersee.
This is one of my personal favorites.
It’s quieter.
It’s surrounded by mountains.
And when the conditions are right and the water is calm, the reflections can be incredible.
This is exactly why I don’t like rushing Königssee.
If you’re constantly checking the time because you still have to drive two hours back to Munich, you lose part of the experience.
With an overnight stay?
There’s no need to rush.
Day 2 – Eagle’s Nest, Obersalzberg & Jenner Mountain
After breakfast, we wake up already in the mountains.
No two-hour drive from Munich.
No Autobahn traffic.
We’re already here.
And that gives us an enormous advantage.
Eagle’s Nest
When it’s open for the season, the Eagle’s Nest – Kehlsteinhaus is naturally one of the highlights of Berchtesgaden.
Sitting high above the Obersalzberg, the location offers extraordinary views across the surrounding Alps.
But I always think it’s important to remember:
The Eagle’s Nest isn’t simply a beautiful mountain viewpoint.
It belongs to one of the darkest chapters of German history.
That’s why I like to give my guests the historical context behind what they’re seeing rather than simply taking a few pictures and moving on.
Obersalzberg
Depending on your interests, we can spend more time exploring the historical area around the Obersalzberg.
For guests interested in World War II history, this can be one of the most fascinating parts of the entire trip.
Jenner Mountain
And then there’s Jenner Mountain.
If you’ve already seen Königssee from the water, seeing this region from above gives you a completely different perspective.
The Jennerbahn takes you high above the valley, with wonderful views across the Berchtesgaden Alps and toward Königssee.
And because we’re staying overnight?
Again…
We don’t need to spend the entire day looking at the clock.
Day 3 – Berchtesgaden Salt Mine & a Relaxed Journey Back to Munich
After another breakfast in the Alps, there’s still plenty to do.
Berchtesgaden Salt Mine
The Berchtesgaden Salt Mine is a completely different experience from the lakes and mountains.
You’ll change into traditional mining clothing before heading underground and discovering the history of salt mining in the region.
There are tunnels, slides, an underground lake and plenty of history along the way.
And yes…
The slides are fun.
You don’t need to be eight years old to enjoy them.
And That’s Only the Beginning
The beauty of spending several days in Berchtesgaden is that we don’t have to follow exactly the same itinerary every time.
Depending on your interests, the season and the weather, we can also incorporate places and experiences such as:
Lake Hintersee
Ramsau
Rossfeld Panoramic Road
Bad Reichenhall
Salzburg
Hallstatt
additional hiking
or simply more time relaxing and enjoying the mountains.
That’s why I call these adventures, rather than packages.
Your three days don’t need to look exactly like somebody else’s three days.
Why Stay Overnight Instead of Returning to Munich?
For me, this is the biggest advantage.
Munich to Berchtesgaden takes roughly two hours each way depending on traffic.
Do that on multiple consecutive days and suddenly you’re spending an enormous amount of your vacation sitting on the Autobahn.
I’d rather have you sitting beside Königssee.
Or enjoying another coffee at breakfast.
Or standing on a mountain.
Or having a Bavarian beer overlooking the Alps.
Staying in Berchtesgaden means:
Less driving.
More flexibility.
More time at each destination.
More relaxed mornings.
More spontaneous stops.
And most importantly:
It actually feels like you’ve escaped into the Bavarian Alps.
Where Do We Stay in Berchtesgaden?
This is another reason I don’t advertise one fixed price for every multi-day adventure.
Different guests want very different experiences.
Some want five-star luxury.
Others would rather spend less on the hotel and more on their vacation.
Both are absolutely fine.
Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden – My Luxury Choice
If you want to make the overnight stay part of the experience itself, the Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden is difficult to beat.
It’s a five-star mountain resort located high above Berchtesgaden.
The setting is beautiful, the views can be spectacular, and it’s the type of hotel where returning after a long day doesn’t feel like the adventure has ended.
You can relax.
Have a drink.
Enjoy the spa.
Look at the mountains.
And wake up the next morning already surrounded by the Alps.
For a special trip, anniversary or simply because you enjoy beautiful hotels, this would be my luxury choice.
Hotel EDELWEISS Berchtesgaden – My 4-Star Choice
If you’d rather stay directly in Berchtesgaden itself, the Hotel EDELWEISS Berchtesgaden is a wonderful alternative.
It’s a four-star hotel right in town, which gives the experience a different character from the Kempinski.
You can walk out of the hotel and you’re immediately in Berchtesgaden.
Restaurants, shops and the historic center are right around you.
For many of my guests, this offers a great balance between comfort, location and price.
A Good 3-Star Hotel – Comfortable & Sensible
And no, you absolutely don’t need a five-star hotel to enjoy Berchtesgaden.
If you’d prefer a comfortable three-star hotel, I’m more than happy to arrange that too.
The mountains outside don’t become less beautiful because your hotel has one or two fewer stars.
Sometimes a good, comfortable hotel in the right location is exactly what you need.
And naturally, choosing a three-star hotel can significantly reduce the overall cost of your private multi-day adventure.
So, How Much Does a Private Berchtesgaden Multi-Day Tour Cost?
This is probably the question everybody eventually asks.
And the answer is:
It depends on how you’d like to travel.
Because almost every one of my multi-day adventures is individually created, there isn’t one price that makes sense for everybody.
The final price depends on things such as:
Your group size.
The number of days.
Your chosen hotel category.
The exact itinerary.
The season.
The attractions you’d like to visit.
And any special wishes you may have.
A couple staying at a comfortable three-star hotel will naturally have a different total price from a family choosing rooms at the five-star Kempinski.
That’s why I prefer creating an individual offer rather than forcing everybody into the same package.
What’s Included?
Although every itinerary is different, my multi-day adventures are designed to be as easy and comfortable as possible.
Depending on your individual itinerary, your package can include:
Private transportation throughout the adventure
Your hotel accommodation
Sightseeing and attraction tickets
Boat tickets
Cable-car tickets where included in the itinerary
Lunch during our touring days
Drinks during our journey
Snacks and sweets in the vehicle
Parking and transportation costs
All applicable fees and taxes
And, of course:
Me – Sepp – as your private guide and driver throughout the adventure.
What’s Not Included?
There are two main things I normally leave to you:
Dinner
and
personal expenses.
Why isn’t dinner included?
Because after spending the entire day together, I think you should have the evening to yourselves.
Perhaps you’d like a romantic dinner.
Maybe you’d prefer something simple.
Or maybe after a huge Bavarian lunch you’re only interested in a glass of wine and something small.
It’s your evening.
Of course, I’m always happy to recommend restaurants and help with suggestions.
Why This Has Become My Most-Booked Multi-Day Adventure
I offer plenty of beautiful day trips and longer adventures around Bavaria and Austria.
But Berchtesgaden has become my most-booked multi-day trip.
And I think I know why.
It has almost everything people imagine when they dream about Bavaria.
Mountains.
Lakes.
History.
Traditional towns.
Beautiful hotels.
Boat rides.
Cable cars.
Bavarian food.
And plenty of opportunities to simply stop and enjoy where you are.
You don’t need to change hotels every night.
You don’t spend half your vacation in the car.
And every day can feel completely different from the one before.
For me, three days and two nights is a wonderful starting point.
But if you have more time?
We can absolutely stay longer.
A Quick Word About Availability
There’s something important you should know if you’re thinking about doing one of these adventures with me.
I’m a one-man show.
When you book The Bavarian Guide, you’re booking me.
I don’t pass your tour to another guide because I’m busy.
And that’s exactly how I want to keep it.
But it also means my availability for multi-day and overnight adventures is limited.
I can only be in one place at a time.
2026 Is Already Fully Booked
For overnight and multi-day adventures, my 2026 availability is already completely booked.
I’m incredibly grateful for that.
But I also know it’s disappointing when somebody finds me and realizes their dates are no longer available.
Bookings for 2027 & 2028 Are Now Open
The good news is:
My calendar for 2027 and 2028 is now open.
So if you’re already planning your Bavaria vacation for either of those years, you’re absolutely not too early.
In fact, for a private multi-day adventure, planning early is something I’d strongly recommend.
Especially if:
You have fixed travel dates.
You’d like a specific hotel.
You’re traveling during summer.
You’re visiting around Oktoberfest.
Or you’d like several consecutive days with me.
Once those dates are booked, they’re booked.
Can I Customize the Adventure?
Absolutely.
In fact, that’s the whole point.
Perhaps you don’t care about World War II history and would rather spend more time around the lakes.
Fine.
Perhaps the Eagle’s Nest is at the top of your bucket list.
We’ll prioritize it.
Maybe you love hiking.
Maybe you don’t want to hike at all.
Perhaps you want to add Salzburg.
Or maybe you want to stay four nights instead of two.
This isn’t about me telling you how you have to spend your vacation.
It’s about creating a private adventure around you.
What Happens If the Weather Changes?
Welcome to the Alps.
The weather occasionally has its own itinerary.
That’s another advantage of spending several days together.
If Monday looks perfect for Königssee but Tuesday looks better for Jenner, we can often change things around.
If the mountains are covered in clouds one morning, perhaps that’s the perfect time for the Salt Mine or another indoor experience.
A private multi-day tour gives us flexibility that a rigid itinerary simply doesn’t have.
And I use that flexibility whenever it makes your experience better.
Is 3 Days / 2 Nights Enough for Berchtesgaden?
Yes.
I think it’s a fantastic amount of time for a first visit.
You can experience several of the major highlights without feeling as though you’re constantly rushing from one attraction to another.
But could you spend four or five days here?
Easily.
Especially if you want to add Salzburg, Hallstatt, more hiking, Lake Hintersee or simply build some slower time into your vacation.
Berchtesgaden isn’t somewhere you need to “finish.”
Sometimes the best thing you can do here is simply stay a little longer.
My Final Recommendation
If your Bavaria vacation is long enough, don’t spend every night in Munich.
Munich makes a fantastic base.
But Bavaria changes completely once you wake up in the mountains.
A three-day escape to Berchtesgaden gives you something a normal day trip simply can’t:
Time.
Time to enjoy Königssee.
Time to walk toward Obersee.
Time to understand the history of the Obersalzberg.
Time to head up Jenner Mountain.
Time to explore the Salt Mine.
Time for lunch without constantly checking your watch.
And time to wake up the next morning, look outside and realize:
You’re still in the Bavarian Alps.
That’s why this has become my most-booked multi-day adventure.
And it’s one I still genuinely love doing.
