25 Unforgettable Things to Do in Bavaria Before You Die: A Local’s Ultimate Guide
Bavaria isn’t just home to Germany’s most famous castle. It’s a region filled with fairy-tale villages, crystal-clear alpine lakes, snow-capped mountains, medieval towns, royal palaces, beer gardens, and traditions that have been preserved for centuries.
Having been born and raised in Munich, I’ve spent countless days exploring every corner of my beautiful home state. Some places are world-famous, while others remain hidden gems that even many Germans have never discovered.
If you’re planning your first—or even your fifth—visit to Bavaria, here’s my personal bucket list of experiences you simply shouldn’t miss.
1. Visit Neuschwanstein Castle
No trip to Bavaria would be complete without visiting King Ludwig II’s world-famous fairy-tale castle. While millions admire it every year, most visitors don’t realize there’s much more to discover than just the castle itself. Hohenschwangau Castle, Alpsee Lake, Marienbrücke (Mary’s Bridge), and several scenic hiking trails make this one of Bavaria’s most unforgettable destinations.

2. Stand on Germany’s Highest Mountain – Zugspitze
At 2,962 metres (9,718 ft), the Zugspitze offers breathtaking panoramic views across Germany, Austria, Switzerland and, on exceptionally clear days, even Italy. Ride one of the world’s most spectacular cable cars, enjoy lunch above the clouds and, if time allows, explore the glacier.
Sepp’s Insider Tip: If possible, avoid weekends and public holidays during the summer, especially when the weather forecast is good. The mountain gets extremely busy.

3. Walk Around Lake Eibsee
Located at the foot of the Zugspitze, Eibsee is often called Bavaria’s Caribbean thanks to its crystal-clear turquoise water and spectacular mountain scenery. It’s one of the most photographed lakes in Germany.
Sepp’s Insider Tip: If time allows, don’t just stop for photos. The full loop around the lake takes about two hours and offers some of the most beautiful views in Bavaria.

4. Cruise Across Königssee
Often compared to a Norwegian fjord, Königssee is one of Germany’s cleanest and most spectacular lakes. Silent electric boats glide across emerald-green water before reaching the famous pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomä.

5. Visit Obersee
Just beyond St. Bartholomä lies Obersee, one of Bavaria’s most peaceful alpine lakes. Surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks and crystal-clear water, it feels like stepping into another world.
Sepp’s Insider Tip: If you’re visiting between spring and autumn and have enough time, don’t skip Obersee. It’s one of my absolute favourite places in Bavaria.

6. Explore Salzburg
Although located in Austria, Salzburg is only a short drive from Bavaria and makes one of the best day trips in the region. Walk through the UNESCO-listed Old Town, visit Mozart’s birthplace and admire the impressive Hohensalzburg Fortress.
